Trauma (rupture or wounding) of the alimentary tract accounts for approximately one third of all traumatic injuries in the United States, and over half of these injuries are to the small intestine. Patients with these injuries must be treated properly as life and limb are at risk. Diagnosis and treatment is based on the mechanism of injury, the age of the patient, and the clinical picture. He was born in Kent, England in 1819, entered the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1847 and was awarded the Crimea Medal for gallantry at the Battle of Alma (1854). He attained the rank of Surgeon with the rank of Major, and he was surgeon to Queen Victoria at Marlborough House, St James's Palace and at Windsor Castle. He was surgeon-in-charge of the London Hospital and the Army Medical Board from 1874 to 1891. Ferry arrived in Queensland aboard the Minerva in August 1864, and after practising medicine at Bundaberg and Maryborough, became the first medical officer at the fledgling penal settlement at Boronia. It was at Boronia that he was conferred the Military Medal for his services at Alma. He left for England in 1869. He came back to Queensland in 1871 and opened a practice at Toowong. He commenced carrying out pathology in 1881. From 1886 until after his death he had the practice at Toowong until he was required to provide pathology services for the Brisbane General Hospital which he did until his retirement in 1895. He was also a successful general practitioner of a large practice at Bankstown. He died on the eighth of September 1908 at his residence, Queen's Avenue, Toowong. References Category:Australian
